Anthony S. Fauci, MD, has tested positive for COVID-19 and is experiencing mild symptoms, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said Wednesday.
Fauci, who heads the NIAID and is the chief medical advisor to President Joe Biden, tested positive via a rapid antigen test, the NIAID said.
Fauci, who is fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and has received two booster shots, has not been in close contact with Biden or other senior government officials recently, the NIAID said.
“Dr. Fauci will isolate and continue to work from his home,” it said.
In January, Fauci said during a conversation with the Center for Strategic & International Studies that the highly transmissible omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 “will ultimately find just about everybody” but that people who were vaccinated would, with some exceptions, “do reasonably well.”
